David Zhang is an interdisciplinary artist and art preparator hailing from Virginia. Currently based in Chicago, David is working on his BFA in Studio Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a projected graduation year of 2025. Using a perspective developed from his painting background, he melds together painting, sculpture, fibers, and installation. Simultaneously with his studio practice, David also investigates through his curatorial and exhibition design practice, exploring the boundaries of exhibition.
Exploring trauma and identity, he works with an investigative perspective that views humanity as an inherently social and communal creature; rejecting the modern belief of individualism and seperatism. By combining research with his personal biography and experience, his practice manifests as an archive of intimate human connection.
Zhang’s work has been exhibited in multiple group exhibitions, recent selections including, “Fuzz,” at Purple Window Gallery, “Tiny Works Art Show,” at the Fulton Art Collective, and “Ecotones” with Kiki and Bouba Galleries at Chicago Plants. He is also a recipient of the Albert Krehbiel Scholarship and the Mary Lee Peterson Scholarship. Zhang is currently a part of the curation team of the Spring 2025 “SITE curated” show.
